This week’s focus scripture is Exodus 3:1-15 (or Matthew 16:21-28). Last week’s scripture introduced the remarkable rescue of baby Moses. This week he is all grown up and on the run. As the adopted son of Pharaoh’s daughter, he probably had everything going for him. But remember what his many mothers tucked into his heart before letting go of him? A sense of justice-bending courage. In the stories before our story, Moses risks everything to step between an abuser and the abused. Maybe for the first time he has to question what his privileges and comfort are worth, what of the “good life” he is willing to give up in order to gain the Greater Good? In exile, he starts from scratch as a shepherd, but at his core is that same willingness to question what’s in front of him. And maybe that’s what causes him to suddenly stumble onto holy ground and to encounter the voice of God…
I’m heading out to find some “holy ground” for myself this week. If you need anything while I’m away on a short vacation, Jackie will point you to the right person, of course.
Peace on your own end-of-summer journeys,
Pastor Karyn
PS: Check out the pass the peace at the end of the Sunday School at Home lesson. I think you’re going to like it.
