Help Assemble Kitchen and Bath Kits for Afghan Refugees

We’ve just heard from Lutheran Community Services Northwest that more than 50,000 Afghan refugees are being vetted and processed at American military bases. Once completed, refugees will be arriving in our service area and some arrivals are anticipated in early October. They and many other agencies are “lining up safe and affordable housing options, employment opportunities, medical care, translators, transportation and more to create a circle of welcome.” And that’s where Fauntleroy Church comes in…

On October 10th, you and your family are invited to stuff welcome bins full of things like pots and pans, mixing bowls, can openers, shower curtains, bath towels, and waste baskets. Right after church, we’ll be putting together 25 kitchen and 25 bath starter kits for Afghan refugees coming to the greater Seattle area. The items have been donated, but we need your help to pick them up along an assembly line and puzzle piece the stuff into one package while masked and socially distanced of course. (We won’t blind fold you or make you hop on one leg, though that might be fun…) There will be an opportunity to jot a note on a decorated card and then haul bins down to the Garden room for storage until they can be driven to Lutheran Community Services in Tacoma. Even if you can’t physically help, please drop by and pick up a flyer about ways to volunteer to support Afghan refugees or look up that information on the website after October 10th. You could also contribute by bringing a fancy box of tea or scented soap to dress up the basic supplies. Contact Mary Code at codemary55@gmail.com or 206-510-7504 if you have questions.
