The "take what you need" table shown in the photo is always a popular stop for guests at the Saturday "Welcome Table" in White Center. The free meal coordinated by the Westside Interfaith Network has been dishing food and fellowship since 2013. Fauntleroy Church volunteers prepare one meal every month and always have new socks to put out for those who need them.
Initiated to serve people who are unsheltered, plus elders and those with disabilities, the Welcome Table's clientele has expanded during the coronavirus epidemic to include many families having trouble making ends meet. Attendance this fall has averaged about 150 people.
The Body of Christ Church, at 1320 SW 102nd St., presently hosts the meal in an outdoor space with lots of room for at-a-distance dining, browsing, and visiting. Representatives from various social-service agencies are often present to provide information about their services.
"The Welcome Table responds in a direct, uncomplicated way to real human needs and is a safe and nonjudgmental place for anyone who needs it," said founder Mary Anne deVry, now a member of Fauntleroy Church. “People come as they are for a hot meal and however much contact they want with others who understand their situation."
The Welcome Table serves every Saturday and on major holidays from Noon to 1:30 PM. No reservation is required.
