BUILDING MAINTENANCE and GROUNDS CUSTODIAN

Fauntleroy Church United Church of Christ, a progressive, open and affirming congregation in West Seattle seeks a Building Maintenance and Grounds Custodian. This position is responsible for all church properties. This is a flexible, 25-40 hour per week position (hours and schedule negotiable within that range) paying $22/hour. Job Summary

The Building Maintenance and Grounds Custodian, in consultation with the Communications and Operations Manager, Facilities Specialist and Facilities Ministry team, will have oversight and responsibility for the upkeep and cleanliness of the building and grounds of Fauntleroy Church United Church of Christ. This position will directly report to the Communications and Operations Manager, with executive supervision by the Senior Minister.

Areas of Responsibility:

Building

•        Perform custodial care of the church building

•        Identify and perform preventive maintenance

•        Make minor repairs

•        Set up and take down for building events

•        Work in cooperation with the Facilities Ministry and Facilities Specialist on major repairs and/or alterations to the building or equipment to determine priority, process and performance

•        Maintain equipment and supply inventory

•        Purchase cleaning, maintenance and other supplies for the church

•        Maintain safety/hazard procedures and egress plan for the building

•        Program heating system weekly

•        Arrange and work with contractors

•        Maintain MSDS notebook

Grounds

•        Ensure maintenance of grounds and parking lots

•        Mow or supervise mowing of lawns

•        Remove leaves and snow from grounds, and acorns, moss and pollen from sidewalks

•        Plant, weed, trim, and water grounds as needed, sharing the duties with volunteers

•        Troubleshoot minor grounds issues and bring major (or costly) issues to attention of Facilities Ministry

Staff and Organizational Relationships

·       Work with the Communications and Operations Manager on the use of church facilities, room arrangements, set-up/clean-up, and issues needing trouble-shooting

·       Act as liaison with the YMCA custodian and staff

·       Coordinate substitute(s) for vacation and, when possible, leave situations

·       Supervise community service volunteers

·       Work with Facilities Ministry and Volunteer/Member Engagement Coordinator to help coordinate church volunteers

  • Oversee work of “contracted” workers; i.e., gardeners, window cleaners, etc.

Required Skills

•        Operation and maintenance of small machinery/equipment and tools (including, but not limited to vacuums, buffers, lawn equipment and extension ladders)

•        Minor electrical and plumbing assessments and repairs

•        Cleaning and maintaining a large building with heavy use by the public

•        Grounds Maintenance

•        Basic computer use

•        Use of operating and instruction manuals

•        Creation and management of a budget

•        Communication by cell phone and e-mail

•        Ability to perform physically demanding tasks

•        Willingness to drive one’s own vehicle for work-related errands (mileage reimbursed)

Additional Expectations

·       Work on M, T, W, Th

·       Work Saturdays as needed for events and/or to achieve hours for week

·       On-call emergency response and ice/snow maintenance at time and a half

·       Attend weekly church staff meetings on Wednesday mornings

·       Serve as the staff liaison to Facilities Ministry, maintaining regular communication with the team and attending the group’s monthly evening meeting

·       Submit to a background check

·       Though being a person of faith is not a requirement, it is expected that the person filling this position will be supportive of the church’s mission, progressive beliefs and the bigger picture of work and ministry all staff together make possible

As required by law, background checks will be conducted on applicants selected for hire. This position reports directly to the Office Manager/Building Coordinator with executive supervision from the Senior Pastor who is head of staff.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRY COORDINATOR

Fauntleroy Church United Church of Christ, a progressive, open and affirming congregation in West Seattle, seeks a Children and Youth Ministry Coordinator. This is a flexible 15 hour per week position over a 12-month program year, and pays $18-20 per hour.

Job Summary

The Children and Youth Ministry Coordinator, working with the Christian Education Ministry and Associate Pastor, creates and delivers activities for children and youth that foster faith development and community. The position combines Sunday School support responsibilities, youth leadership assistance, and regular communication with families to facilitate and encourage participation in Christian Education programming and events.

Areas of Responsibility:

Sunday School Support

·       Collaborate with the Christian Education Ministry and Associate Pastor on curriculum selection for programs and special events.

·       Work with Christian Education Ministry members and church Volunteer Coordinator to support delivery of Sunday School Services, including:

o   Recruiting and training volunteers

o   Gathering and organizing Sunday School supplies

o   Providing day-of Sunday School support most Sundays, such as helping set up classrooms for Sunday morning lessons and checking in with classes throughout Sunday morning

o   Communicating with families about Sunday School activities

o   As needed, assist with special Sunday School gatherings, such as Children’s Chapel or Christmas  pageant preparation

Youth Leadership

·       Collaborate with the Christian Education Ministry and Senior Pastor to support the youth of the church

·       Help plan and lead some middle school/high school youth activities (e.g., Sunday School, fellowship, Sunday service projects)

·       Be a secondary leadership presence for a 3rd-5th grade group with potential growth into the primary lead

·       Provide occasional assistance with confirmation classes and activities when one of the pastors is absent

Communication and Network Building

·       Communicate regularly with families and youth about upcoming events in the Church and wider UCC Conference through social media, email, church blog, and newsletters

·       Spend time each week on encouragement and connection of families and volunteers via notecards, thank you notes, calls/texts, and other outreach

·       Occasionally join staff meetings and meet with the Associate Pastor or Christian Education Ministry for the purpose of planning and sharing resources

·       Help explore opportunities for youth fellowship and service with area churches

We recognize that there are many possibilities for this role in our church, and we anticipate that the work will be tailored to the time and talent of the individual who can help us meet the needs of our community. We also hope that this role will be expanded over time.
